H. Daniel Peck is the John Guy Vassar Professor of English at Vassar College, where he has directed the American Studies and Environmental Studies programs. His books include Thoreau's Morning Work and A World by Itself: The Pastoral Moment in Cooper's Fiction, both published by Yale Univ. Press. Professor Peck has directed two NEH Summer Institutes for College and University Faculty, "Hudson River Valley Art and Literature: Constructing a National Culture in 19th-Century America," and "The Environmental Imagination: Issues and Problems in American Nature Writing." He is also the recipient of two NEH Fellowships and an ACLS Fellowship. Recently his work has turned toward visual art, with an article on Asher B.
