Joshua Brown is Professor of History at the City University of New York’s Graduate Center and Executive Director of the American Social History Project/Center for Media and Learning, The Graduate Center. He teaches and publishes on a wide array of visual media, from illustrated newspapers to cartoons to graphic novels to photography. His visual essays, written as a collaboration accompanying Columbia University historian Eric Foner’s Forever Free: The Story of Emancipation and Reconstruction (Knopf, 2005), provide fresh insight into woodcuts, photographs, broadsides, and other American art that tell the nation’s struggles over slavery and freedom. Brown is one of the nation’s leaders in conceiving of new media techniques in history teaching and using visual evidence to teach U.S. history.
