Neil Harris

Neil Harris is the Preston and Sterling Morton Professor Emeritus in the Departments of History and Art History at the University of Chicago. He has published and taught on many topics, including American art and artists, technology, architecture, city planning, and design; American entertainment; the development of American museums, libraries, and learned societies; and a range of other subjects from photography and collecting to world's fairs and advertising.  Harris’s many books include The Artist in American Society: The Formative Years, 1790-1860 (Chicago, 1966); with Alastair Duncan and Martin Eidelberg, Masterworks of Louis Comfort Tiffany (Abrams, 1989); and Building Lives: Constructing Rites and Passages (Yale, 1999).
