Michael Conzen


Michael Conzen, Professor of Geography at the University of Chicago, has broad research interests in the history of urban morphology and social geography. His 1990 edited book, The Making of the American Landscape, remains a classic in the field. He has worked closely with the Newberry on many projects, including curating two exhibitions: “1848: Chicago’s Turning Point,” (1998), and “Mapping Manifest Destiny: Chicago and the American West” (2007-08; with Diane Dillon). He was cartographic editor for The Encyclopedia of Chicago (Chicago, 2004) in both its online and printed formats.
